Overview

We are organizing two teams for the Texas Independence Relay March 5-6, 2010! A team of up to 12 covers 203 miles from Gonzalez, Texas to Houston, Texas over 40 relay legs.  Each relay leg is between 3 and 8 miles.  With a team of 12, runners can expect to run 3 to 4 relay legs, totaling 15-20 miles over the weekend.  The race starts Saturday morning and ends Sunday afternoon.

In 2009, 12 Heels and Hills participants had an absolute blast, so we were excited to plan out the logistics for letting twice as many people participate next year! See info about the 2009 team... And see the write-up of the 2009 event...

We handle the logistics of renting vans, reserving hotel rooms, and planning out the team's relay legs to get us from Point A to Point B.  You do not want to be left out!  We have one full team of 12 filled already and am actively adding to the second team of 12.  Please email us if you are interested in getting on the 2010 team! If you've never done a long distance relay, it truly is an experience of a lifetime, creating friendships over the 200 miles that stay with you while celebrating being active!

Details

Basics

A team of up to 12 covers 203 miles from Gonzales, Texas to Houston, Texas over 40 relay legs.  Each relay leg is between 3 and 8 miles.  With a team of 12, runners can expect to run 3 to 4 relay legs, totaling 15-20 miles over the weekend.  The race starts Saturday morning and ends Sunday afternoon.

Teams

We intend to have two teams – an all-female team (there are only a handful in the whole race and last year we had 1 of 6 female teams!) and a co-ed team.

Schedule

Friday, March 5

Vans will leave at 10 am from the DFW Airport South Remote Parking.  Remote parking costs are your responsibility if you will be leaving a car there ($7 a day)

There will be rest/bathroom stops and a lunch break on the drive down.  We arrive in Seguin around 4 pm for hotel check-in.

Dinner at a restaurant in town that night

Saturday, March 6

The race will start early in the morning in Gonzales.  Amid celebratory cannon blasts and hits on the official TIR gong, the whole team runs the 1.15 mile Prologue as a group, at a leisurely pace.

Then the relay has started.  There are two vans, each with half the team.  One van is the “active” van, with runners doing 6 relay legs, while the “resting” van is eating, sightseeing, resting, or sleeping at the hotel.  Then the vans change off every 6 legs, which is typically every 4 hours or so.

We will have a hotel in Sealy on Saturday night for an opportunity for both vans to get a turn at sleeping a few hours.

For running night legs, runners wear reflective and LED gear to make them visible to traffic.  Vans “leap-frog” their runners through the night hours to keep them safe.  The van drives a quarter mile past the runner, pulls off to the side of the road, waits for the runner to pass, and then repeats this process.

Sunday, March 7

The team is about halfway through the relay Sunday morning.  Vans continue to rotate through the day.

Around 3 pm, both vans are at the San Jacinto Monument, the location of the race finish.  The team cheers in the Leg 40 relay runner together as they come to the finish of the race.   The whole group then makes their way the last 0.38 miles up to the monument, where you receive your finisher medal and take a group photo.

Costs

When we added up all the costs, it comes to $260.

If you do not want to share a bed with anyone Friday night, there is an additional $35 charge.

Expect to spend another $20-40 for team shirts, dependent on if you want t-shirt vs tech shirt and the number you will want to wear for the weekend trip.

What This Cost Gets You

We operate that you should get a break to nap for a couple hours in an actual bed in an actual hotel room about halfway through the trip, which is Saturday night.  Many trip planners and teams expect you to sleep in the van if you want any rest during the 36 hour adventure!  We think everyone is a little fresher and friendlier with a hot shower and some uninterrupted sleep.

Your entry fee covers all of the following costs associated with the trip:

  • Entry into the event (entry fee is $1000 per team!)
  • Texas Independence Relay participant items (shirt, socks as provided by the event)
  • Van rental – 2 12-seater passenger vans (nice and large to keep everyone comfortable and let people stretch out some)
  • Gas costs for the approximately 2,000 miles the vans will drive over that weekend to and from Dallas and back and forth along the race route
  • Friday night hotel
  • Saturday night hotel for the period of time when your van is resting
  • All logistical planning and coordination of relay legs and travel
  • Supply list and tips and advice

Any other costs you incur, including meals and snacks, are the responsibility of the attendee.

We will need to find drivers for all the vans.  Please talk to friends and family to see if someone will come along to save the runners from having to drive!  Volunteer van drivers will pay only a fraction of the cost.

Payment Schedule and Conditions

A 75% deposit is due immediately to secure your spot (to cover the upfront team entry fees).  So that’s $195.
The last 25% is due February 1.  So $65.
Per person costs are based on having two full teams and the costs of the van, gas, hotels, and team entry fees.

No refunds for amounts already paid and if you have to cancel, you are responsible for finding someone to take your spot.  If you find someone to take your spot, you will be refunded 20% of the amount already paid.

Details in this itinerary are subject to change.
